Research - Examples of positive everyday wellbeing
Hygee - The Danish way to live well
Hygee is an important concept in Denmark which doesn't directly translate to English, but it can be described as cosiness, the feeling of home, the cosiness of the soul, the art of creating intimacy, taking pleassure from the presence of soothing things. Essentially it is small everyday things that can make someone feel relaxed, at home and connected. This is relevant for the topic of city stress and everyday well being because it values small things like closeness to nature by sitting by a river or walking in a park, as well as doing things inside the home like lighting candles or making a cup of tea and sitting by this fire to make a casual, relaxed and peaceful environment. Like the 5 steps to wellbeing says "it is the simple things that give you joy", so these acts of Hygee can increase everyday wellbeing.
Alternative Hedonism - Kate Soper
Urban city living has resulted for many people in busy lifestyles to keep up with the fast pace of the capitalist system. Because of this experiences such as shared mealtime have become much less common simply becasue we don't have time, instead we eat on-the-go before engagements, of in front of the TV. Philosopher Kate Sopers theory Alternative Hedonism recognises the intrinsic expereinces that are lost in this modern way of life, by calling for a re-evaluation of human fullfilment, peasure and self-realisation, and encourages sensory and intrinsic pleassures as a more rewarding way of life. For example the choice to walk to work over driving will offer sensory pleassures that the car driver will never experience. This relates to city stress and everyday wellbeing because as Soper suggests the decision to take time out of your day to reconnect with those intrinsic experiences lost in a urban way of life such as cooking, walking in nature, gardening, or just admiring a view will offer better everyday wellbeing.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is becoming a more supported way to deal with the chaos of urban city living.
"With mindfulness practice, we can overcome distractions and over-thinking, and live more calmly and clearly in the present moment. We can feel kinder and more curious about others. We spend less time worrying about the future or fixating on the past and can allow unhelpful thoughts to simply pass by so we can focus on the task at hand. This reduces stress, anxiety and depression. Over time better focus and attention helps build resilience and wellbeing."
