Our culture is obsessed with being productive. However research shows that "workaholism" doubles the risk of depression and anxiety, as well as leading to sleep problems, shortened attension spans which actually lowers productivity and decreases work preformance.

We are taught that to achieve sucess and hapiness in our culture we have to look ahead. Instead of focusing on being happy in the moment we are encouraged to spend most of our time working with the belief that one day it will pay off. Instead we are left with the constant disatisfaction that there is alway more to be done

Sabine Sonnentag, a professor of Organisational Psychology at the university of Mannheim in Germany, has found that people who can't step away from their work during their downtime expereinces increased exhaustion over the course of one year and became less resilient in the face of stressfull work conditions. Have emotional distance from a demanding job is proven to help people recover from stress faster.

Research show that scheduling time away from work such as excersise, walks in nature and total absorbtion in a hobby that's unrelated to work can lead to a higher level of wellbeing.
